The Observatory

WHAT WE DID

The Observatory is where nature meets architecture. Careful collaboration and Attention to Detail have created a space which honours its past, looks to the future and is built to last.

The Vision

To bring Chris Connell Design's vision to life, with metalwork which is simple for the builder to install, and stands the test of time in a high-traffic hospitality setting.

The Challenges

  • Aligning each piece with internal datums while preserving architectural and design details.
  • Polishing welds to a seamless finish, or where visible - made as small as possible.
  • Where required, joins to be perfectly aligned.
  • Removing the typical radius on all metal folds.

The Solutions

  • Shop Drawings, Attention To Detail, and careful QC at each step.
  • Experienced trades blend old-school techniques with modern technology to reduce size of visible welds or polish them out completely.
  • Test-assembly of each piece in our factory prior to despatch.
  • Our R-Zero tooling creates a tight fold with no radius - transforming folded sheet metal into a clean, sharp profile

Key Deliverables

  • Hanging gantries
  • Wine storage shelf units
  • All stainless steel cladding to joinery, benchtops and columns
  • Host Station and Planter

CLIENT NOTES

"Stainless Steel was the obvious choice, and together with Formanova's new machines we'd be able to achieve things that we couldn't before - such as the really nice knife-edge folds. So much deeper than just a line on paper" - Chris Connell
